François Canot, born in Paris around 1720, settled around 1746 in Lyon where he married Marie Muguet, the sister-in-law of Pierre Nogaret. He did not apply for mastership of the Lyon joiners until 1758, twelve years after his arrival. The joiners' community strongly opposed his admission, criticizing him for having no proof of apprenticeship and for not having worked for any Lyon master craftsman. An annulment trial took place in April 1758, in which Canot was condemned by a vote of 98 to 6. Perhaps because of this turbulent career, chairs bearing Canot's stamp [a small flower / CANOT/ S pour sculpsit (a sculpté)] are very rare.
