A beautiful modern painting from the 1970s, blending flat areas of color, sinuous lines, and layering, typical of Castro's graphic exploration of rhythm, verticality, and structure. A warm, decorative, and dynamic work, from a private donation (handwritten dedication). This vertical composition, created in 1976, belongs to Sergio de Castro's late abstract period, characterized by dense impasto, the use of organic lines, and a warm color palette. The abbreviated signature "Castro" followed by the date appears regularly in his works on paper from the 1960s and 70s.
Sergio de Castro (1922–2012) was an Argentinian painter, draftsman, and composer who became a naturalized French citizen. Trained in Buenos Aires and then Santiago, Chile, he settled in Paris in 1949, where he attended Léon Zack's studio and quickly became part of the postwar art scene. His early works, still figurative, evolved toward a structured abstraction based on geometry, color rhythms, and planar construction. In the 1950s and 70s, he developed a highly personal style combining gouache, mixed media, and large painted panels, often inspired by architecture and music. He exhibited in Europe, Latin America, and the United States during this period, and participated in several international biennials. His works are now held in numerous museums and private collections. Until the end of his life, he pursued constant research on light, transparency, and chromatic vibration.
