Two rectangular bas-relief plaques in hardened wood with a brown patina, depicting two nymphs after the Fountain of the Innocents in Paris (water and fire).
Period: mid-19th century.
They are in good condition, with well-defined subjects and a lovely patina.
Note only two small imperfections on the lower corners of the fire goddess; one is darker than the other.
The hardened wood is a composition made of rosewood or ebony sawdust and ox blood, the albumin of which acts as a binder.
By heating and applying pressure in molds and dies, small objects, formerly called "Parisian articles," are formed.
This reconstituted wood is black or brown, very dense, and resistant to boiling water.
Height: 40 cm.
Width: 17 cm.
Thickness: 2 cm.
Weight of both: 1.745 kilograms.
