Suzanne Ramié trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. She began her career as a textile designer in Lyon before moving to Provence in the mid-1930s. She learned the art of ceramics from the potter Jean-Baptiste Chiapello and then, in 1938, founded the Madoura workshop in Vallauris with her husband, Georges Ramié. The name is an acronym formed from the first letters of the words "maison" (house), "Douly," and "Ramoi." Breaking with the tradition of utilitarian objects produced by local potters, she created works with clean, original forms and became one of the key figures in Vallauris. She is also known for her artistic ties with Pablo Picasso, whom she welcomed into her studio in 1946 and to whom she taught the art of enameling and firing clay.
