CHAM - At the Opera Ball. Paris, Martinet, De Vresse, circa 1850; quarto, 16 pages, paperback. Born Amédée de Noé in 1818 and died in 1879, this caricaturist primarily contributed to the newspapers Le Charivari and L'Illustration, inspired by Honoré Daumier. He frequently caricatured the celebrities of his time, including Proudhon and members of the National Assembly. He also caricatured theater actors, being a playwright himself. Cham could claim to be one of the fathers of comics, as his albums are contemporary with those of Töppfer.
