Saint Bartholomew, oil on canvas, 17th century
This impressive antique painting, oil on canvas from the 17th century, depicts the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew.
The scene, rich in pathos and strong emotional value, captures the climax of the saint's torment.
Saint Bartholomew, placed at the center of the composition, is depicted bare-chested, bound and with his body twisted, illuminated by a beam of light that highlights his musculature and suffering expression. Around him are his executioners, captured in dynamic poses, while a cherub or angel at the top holds a cloth, introducing a symbolic and heavenly element in contrast to the brutality of the earthly scene.
The work shows signs of wear and color loss, confirming the need for restoration: abrasions, small paint losses, and oxidation of the varnish diminish its legibility but at the same time testify to the authenticity and long history of the painting.
