Penitent Mary Magdalene. Oval faience plaque from Moustiers. The saint is depicted here with one hand on a skull (a symbol of worldly vanity), praying before the cross and illuminated by the divine breath. This plaque is characteristic of popular devotional objects produced in Moustiers. The two holes at the top of the plaque are original and allowed for wall mounting. It is worth noting that Mary Magdalene, companion of Christ, is said to have spent her final days in Provence and that her relics are said to be in the Basilica of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, which is only about 70 kilometers from Moustiers.
Dimensions: 26.5 cm high by 22 cm wide.
