A 17th-century carved oak four-poster bed with later additions. The headboard depicts the legend of Saint Veronica, who is said to have wiped Christ's brow with her veil before his crucifixion. This bed is housed in the Vatican. The carving represents Saint Veronica and the image of Jesus, framed by carvings of cherubs and foliage. The carved balusters of the base are also framed, originally with rope supports, but now with fixed panels. This bed, dating from around 1630, is a remarkable testament to English history! Saint Veronica, also known as Berenice, was a widow from Jerusalem who lived in the 1st century. Tradition tells that Veronica, moved by seeing Jesus carrying the cross to Calvary, gave him her veil so that he could wipe his brow. Jesus accepted, and when he returned the veil to her, the image of his face was captured in it, which became known as the Veil of Veronica. Height 200 cm, width 140 cm (at its widest point), length 212 cm (at its widest point). Mattress dimensions: 120 x 190/200 cm (small double bed).
