"A Burst Of Color By Antoine Ferrari (1910-1995)"
A superb, highly modern work depicting a bouquet of flowers on a table, bordering on abstraction. This oil on canvas measures 81cm x 65cm plus frame and is signed lower right A. FERRARI. A work of great modernity and audacity by this friend of Pierre Ambrogiani. Full of power and color. Antoine FERRARI, born in 1910 in Marseille, died in 1995. He is among the greatest Provençal painters of his generation. A gestural, lively, and energetic style of painting, reflecting a man who exuded exemplary tranquility and serenity. He was a student at the Marseille School of Fine Arts. At 17, he left for Paris and worked in a theater set design workshop. He began exhibiting in 1928. He met Ambrogiani and, starting in 1930, received a scholarship to study painting. In 1937, he won the Abdel-Tif Prize, which allowed him to spend two years in Algeria. There, he developed his bold use of color. He later took over Pascin's studio in Paris. He expressed himself through large nudes, portraits, bouquets, landscapes, and views of the port of Marseille. His brushstrokes, which, after long reflection, strike like a whip, like those of an impulsive painter, earned him recognition as the most expressionistic of contemporary Provençal painters.
