These frames were works of art in their own right, crafted with refined techniques that combined the skill of the carpenter with the expertise of bronze workers and gilders. Constructed "cassette" from ebonized wood, they were covered with gilded copper sheets with gilded bronze trim at the corners. Also along the outer perimeter, at the midpoint of the sides, are gilded bronze friezes composed of two volutes joined by a cherub's head. The copper sheet was decorated with an applied gilded bronze frieze. Mirrors with beveled edges were placed inside.
Producing frames like these, even in the 19th century, required considerable expense. Furthermore, the larger size was rarer, as it required the use of so much material.
Excellent condition.
