"Provençal "sauteuse" Commode In Carved Walnut, Marble Top"
A truly remarkable Provençal commode with Louis XV style handles carved from a single block of wood. The commode features a two-drawer design (and a small, concealed drawer hidden beneath a false crossbar) with a sinuous front. It has molded, cabriole legs at the front and back. The uprights are finely carved with small flowers, while the lower crossbar depicts scrollwork and a shell motif. The drawer handles are incredibly intricate, carved from scrollwork. A molded intermediate crossbar forms a small drawer with concealed locking mechanisms. The paneled sides retain a distinctly Louis XIV style. It retains its original locks. The superb period marble top, with a corbin-shaped edge, is made of Sainte-Baume yellow marble. This Provençal piece dates from the mid-18th century and is quite unique. It is well-proportioned.
