Coconut Calyx
Carved coconut chalice. Probably Baniar work, late 19th – early 20th century. This rare chalice is made entirely of carved coconut, a material traditionally used in West African art, particularly in Baniar production. The object displays remarkable engraving and carving, transforming the coconut into a veritable narrative sculpture. The upper cup is decorated with finely incised circular medallions depicting figurative scenes: stylized figures, crossed weapons, and silhouettes in motion; all elements evoking a symbolic or warlike vocabulary. The hatched backgrounds and crossed lines enhance the depth and legibility of the motifs. The foot, also carved from coconut, features a decoration of stylized foliage arranged in broad vertical ribs that accentuate the chalice's verticality and underscore its ritual character. A small central ring, also carved, connects the two parts and adds further refinement. Through its material, its dark and glossy patina, and the finesse of its workmanship, this chalice testifies to remarkable traditional craftsmanship: an object that is at once utilitarian, ceremonial, and artistic, where each motif bears the mark of a precise artisanal gesture. A unique, symbolic, and decorative piece, it embodies the richness of coconut carving in West African cultures.
