Pair of stoneware medallions with a salt-glazed, high-fire finish, depicting a mermaid and a triton in the sea. Belgium, 1930s/40s. Very good condition. 15 x 15 x 2 cm. Incised signature on the back: Grès Guérin Bouffioulx. René Guérin (1896-1954) is one of the leading names in Belgian ceramics. After studying chemistry and apprenticing in various ceramic workshops, including Manufacture de Sèvres, he founded his company "Les poteries Guérin" in 1919. He produced sculptures, vases, and decorative tiles for architectural projects. In 1938, the company changed its name to "Grès de Bouffioulx" and closed its doors in 1970.
