Pair Antique Japanese Meiji Bronze Vases With Mixed-metal Birds & Insects, 19th Century
A fine antique pair of Japanese Meiji period bronze vases decorated in high-relief mixed metals (takazōgan and hirazōgan). Each vase shows a naturalistic design of birds among chrysanthemums and grasses, with numerous applied small creatures in copper, shakudō, shibuichi, and gilt metal — including frogs, beetles, a wasp, and other insects rendered with superb detail.
The vases are of elegant baluster form with slightly flared rims, each presenting a different yet complementary scene, as typical of Meiji artisan workshop production. Their warm brown patination, varied alloy tones, and meticulously worked details exemplify high-quality late 19th-century Japanese metalwork.
