Terracotta Group Giacomo Vaccaro Caltagirone Sicily XIX Century
Artist: Giacomo Vaccaro
A group of two peasant figures, typical of the production begun by the founder of a family of Caltagirone pottery makers, Bongiovanni Vaccaro. In excellent condition, except for a missing finger on the male figure's hand, visible in the photo.
Signature engraved in paste on the base: Cav. G. Vaccaro Caltagirone. Giacomo Bongiovanni and his nephew Giuseppe Vaccaro were the most renowned figurine makers in Caltagirone in the second half of the 19th century. Their figures were highly successful; they depicted the protagonists of real life in the village, including farmers returning home on donkeys, beggars, children, hunters, grandparents entertaining their grandchildren, and itinerant musicians. The artistic legacy was continued by Giacomo Vaccaro, Giuseppe's second son, who continued to sign with the double surname, making it a truly distinctive trademark.
