NATTERO Louis (1870-1915) attributed to

"Place Puget, Toulon"

Oil on canvas,
Unsigned,
Inscribed on the back of the stretcher "Nattero".

This beautiful work, attributed to the Marseilles painter Louis Nattero, depicts a view of Place Puget in Toulon, taken from Rue Ferdinand Pelloutier.
As was his custom, the work is executed with impasto and perfectly captures the atmosphere of a lively day in a Provençal street.

This work can be compared to other compositions by the artist.
He painted several views of the streets of Toulon and the market in this same format.

After an unhappy childhood, spent in an orphanage, he turned to painting. In 1891, he married in Toulon. At the age of 26, thanks to a scholarship from the city of Toulon, he became a student of Léon Bonnat in Paris. However, suffering from lead poisoning, he was forced to cut short his studies in Paris.
He then returned to Toulon before settling permanently in Marseille, his birthplace, in 1904.
His talent was quickly recognized, and his paintings were a great success with clients in Marseille and Toulon.
From 1902 onwards, he participated in exhibitions in Toulon and Marseille, where his talent was rewarded with numerous prizes.

Dimensions: 24 x 19 cm unframed and 34 x 29.9 cm with its modern giltwood frame.
