Rare antique brass folding rule and square, signed Butterfield Paris, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. Measures 17 cm when closed.
The instrument features several historical measurement scales: Demy pied de Roy (French Royal Foot), Demy pied du Rhin (Rhine Foot), as well as lignes and other finely engraved subdivisions. These compact multi-scale rulers were used by engineers, surveyors, architects and mapmakers to convert and transfer measurements before the metric system.
Very good condition for its age: clear engraving, original brass surface, functioning hinge. A fine example of scientific craftsmanship from the renowned Butterfield workshop.
