Jean-Victor Bertin (born March 20, 1767 in Paris, died June 11, 1842 in the same city) Entrance to the Park of Saint-Cloud 1804 Oil on canvas 32 x 24 cm (image dimensions) Original Empire frame Expertise: François Marandet, London Cf.: the smaller version without figures Grisebach, Berlin, November 30, 2016, lot 201 (€18,750) Several versions have been preserved. A version entitled "View of the Gates of the Park of Saint-Cloud" was acquired in 1997 by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles (California, USA. Oil on canvas. H. 0.30; W. 0.40; ill. 7). According to François Marandet, our painting is a version very similar to the one in Los Angeles. While the view is almost identical, one difference lies in the introduction of figures approaching the park (the painting in the County Museum of Art has no figures) and in the almost square format of our painting. According to Marandet, the main difference between the two paintings lies in the nature of the light. The reddish tint of the walls in the Los Angeles painting suggests that it is a sunset. In contrast, our view of the gates of the park at Saint-Cloud seems to reflect another time of day, perhaps morning, as the foliage of the trees forms a much sharper contrast than in the American version, where the trees are dark. Since the other views of Saint-Cloud date from 1803, our painting was probably executed around the same time, most likely immediately after 1804, when Saint-Cloud became the property of the Imperial household (Marandet, London, October 12, 2025).
