18th-century Monastic Art, Straw Marquetry And Bark Embroidery, Virgin Mary Bone Carved
beautiful, ornate cardboard plaque, likely a wall decoration for a religious institution's bedroom, is double-layered and covered with what appears to be birch bark.
Openwork is cut with penknife and glued on a canvas background, the weave of which is visible. This openwork is outlined with touches of color, and the whole is framed by two fluted straw borders.
On centre, on an unusual oval of pinkish-silver paper, is a small bone sculpture, a delicate Virgin and Child Enthroned, only 4 cm high!
Likely a work from a religious school, it has a monogram on back and is a unique piece from 18th or early19th century.
Good condition, with visible wear and soiling. 11cm x 9.5 cm,
