A little history: The Bayel glassworks was founded in 1666 by a Venetian master glassmaker, Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay, who was granted royal authorization by Louis XVI to supply the court, thus becoming the Royale de Champagne Bayel Crystal Factory. In the 19th century, the factory shifted its focus to lead crystal following its acquisition by the Marquot family in 1854. The 20th century saw the factory experience its golden age, employing over 600 people and working for prestigious clients, including the Élysée Palace, the White House, the Ritz, the Orient Express, the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits (a French hotel chain), Fabergé, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and many others. The factory closed its doors in 2016 after 350 years of history, but a museum established in 1994 allows visitors to discover its entire history. See the shop
