Neoclassical Cylindrical Secretary Desk With Clock, Circa 1780
An important Neoclassical cylinder desk resting on six tapered square legs, chamfered at the corners. The lower section, a slightly projecting two-drawer commode, is adorned with circular porcelain plaques decorated with polychrome floral motifs and finely chased brass mounts. A drop-front with round knobs opens the cylinder, revealing a richly fitted interior with small drawers and a lockable central compartment. The upper section, with two doors, is structured by side pilasters and additional drawers. At the top of the piece is an integrated clock with an enamel dial and Roman numerals, housed in a curved case decorated with a central urn, flanked by fleurons and laurel wreaths. An inlaid star motif adorns the front of the cylinder, while the rest of the surface features intricate geometric marquetry and a walnut burl veneer. This remarkable desk is a masterful synthesis of cabinetmaking skill and horological precision of the late 18th century.
