A beautiful oil painting on hardboard depicting a soldier of the French army in 1870. This painting was created by the renowned mountain painter Marcel Wibault (July 13, 1904, Besançon – February 28, 1998, Chamonix). Around 1930, he became best known for his mountain paintings, particularly those depicting Mont Blanc, Chamonix, the Alps, chalets, and alpine flowers. He began his artistic career sketching soldiers of the 60th Infantry Regiment in Besançon before becoming a student at the École des Beaux-Arts. In the 1930s, he settled in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, where he explored and painted the landscapes of Savoy and Haute-Savoie, often in a single session, working en plein air. Encouraged by his wife, he devoted himself to mountain painting and received numerous commissions from art lovers, supporting himself in part through his art. He was also a mentor to his son, Lionel Wibault, himself a painter. Through his work, Marcel Wibault documented the construction of the Mont Blanc Tunnel in the 1960s, adding a historical dimension to his artistic output. His studio and chalet in Chamonix, the Alpenrose, now house a museum dedicated to his work, where the public can discover his paintings and his world. His style, marked by precision and a passion for the mountains, earned him a prestigious clientele, including Prince Rainier of Monaco and dignitaries from the Dutch court. He is renowned for his ability to capture the light, shadows, and details of alpine landscapes, as well as for his warm and approachable manner with his visitors and clients.
