Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Black wooden frame. Dimensions: 100 x 70 cm. Originally from Le Havre, Charles Léon HERRMANN moved to Paris where he studied under Philippe Rousseau at the École des Beaux-Arts. He began as a landscape painter before becoming a portraitist, animal painter, and genre painter. His first participation in the Salon des Artistes Français is noted, from 1861 to 1908. He also exhibited in Munich and Vienna and won several medals, including a silver medal in 1900 at the Universal Exhibition. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1897.
