Jupiter, master of Olympus and lord of the heavens, appears here in all his splendor, his scepter in one hand, his thunderbolt in the other. He reigns, strong in his destructive power, over mortals and immortals.
Our bronze is a replica of a Roman original from the 1st-2nd century AD, believed to have come from Hungary and now in the British Museum (inv. 1865,0103.36). The antique bronze was once part of Baron Denon's collection (see the engraving after René Theodore Berthon).
Gustave Moreau owned the same bronze replica, which was placed in 1884 on the mantelpiece in his bedroom, and then, after 1895, on that of his study on the first floor, alongside a Bull and another Jupiter. These objects served as models for the artist, as evidenced by numerous drawings and paintings.
