Rare and finely crafted, this plaster head with a marbled appearance rests on a wooden base. Probably from the Sens Museum.
This Diadumen head is inspired by a Roman marble head dating from the 2nd century AD, itself based on a Greek original (Polykleitos) from around 440-430 BC. The Roman head was discovered in 1863 or 1865 at Vauluisant Abbey in Burgundy.
Many diadem wearers are known, and numerous copies have been found and made since ancient Greece, but this modest plaster example is particularly rare and an integral part of Burgundian history.
In very good condition, with normal wear and a few superficial scratches.
Dimensions: 38 x 19 x 18 cm / Weight: 3.381 kg
