Like a theatrical set or a fairytale illustration, these pine trees figure a dreamlike world around a pond. The texture of the rocks, the pine bark, the reflection of the daylight filtering through the needles—all these elements recall the illustrations in Russian folktales, which made Ivan Bilibin famous. At the same time, this way of depicting nature is quite characteristic of the Pont-Aven painters. Our painting, acquired in Sweden, retains for the moment its mysterious power of attraction.
