Pende or Chokwe Lidded Basket – Handwoven Storage Basket, First Half of the 20th Century (Congo/Angola) Description: Superb traditional handwoven basket made by the Pende or Chokwe people of Congo-Angola, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Crafted from natural plant fibers (raffia or rattan) in shades of brown and black, it features a refined geometric design typical of Central African craftsmanship. The basket has a domed lid with a cylindrical neck and two woven handles for carrying. It was once used to store food or personal belongings. A fine example of early 20th-century African craftsmanship, both utilitarian and decorative.
