View Of The Tiber In Rome By Joseph Vernet
A beautiful engraving after a painting by Joseph Vernet depicting a view of Rome with jousting on the Tiber. This engraving, along with its companion piece (a view of Naples), marks a turning point in the career of the engraver Pierre-Jacques Duret (1729-1804), who became the official engraver to King Christian VII of Denmark, to whom these engravings are dedicated. The same is true for Joseph Vernet, as the composition is reminiscent of his series on the ports of France, and the two paintings likely served as models for Louis XVI's commission of the Ports of France series. The engraving is an 18th-century print, in good overall condition despite some creases, and measures 54 x 74.2 cm at the plate mark. It is sold unframed.
