"Emmanuel Marcel-laurent (1892-1948). Rough Sea."
A painting dated 1926, rather atypical in the work of this artist who usually offers more "conventional" representations of Brittany and its people. With this tumultuous seascape, it presents an almost fantastical vision where imagination plays a significant role in the painter's intention. Titled "The Korrigans," there are no known places of that name resembling exactly this view.
Emmanuel Marcel-Laurent (1892-1948) was a painter of Breton subjects, very often located in Finistère: seascapes, markets, pardons (religious festivals), etc. He was appointed official painter of the navy in 1942. His technique can be seen evolving from the 1930s onward, sometimes with a lighter touch, a more "Art Deco" style, and a signature in capital letters, later accompanied by a marine anchor. His appointment as an official marine painter.
