16th Century Brussels Tapestry.
A Brussels tapestry in wool and silk, with silver and gold thread, depicting "The Gathering of the Manna" after a cartoon by Martin Reymbouts (1570-1619). This important composition represents the Israelites gathering "the manna" in a lakeside landscape, likely the land of Canaan. The subject refers to the episode of the miraculous fall of manna, a heavenly bread that fed the Hebrews in the Sinai desert after their exodus from Egypt. All of this is set within a rich border decorated with garlands of fruit, the spandrels of which are adorned with a peacock and a parrot at the top, and a stag and a greyhound at the bottom. Brussels, circa 1590. History and related work: Our Brussels tapestry of the Gathering of the Manna is part of a large series of eleven tapestries illustrating the life of Moses. They originally adorned the walls of Chartres Cathedral for the coronation of Henry IV in 1594. The museum holds five of these wall tapestries: the Burning Bush, Moses and Pharaoh, the Crossing of the Red Sea, the Gathering of the Manna, and the Piercing of the Rock. Our tapestry, whose central composition is similar, can be compared to the one held in the collections of the Chartres Museum of Fine Arts under inventory number AP28W00875. Historical classification number: 1939/05/01: classified as a historical object (see illustration). A museum-quality tapestry with a backing that includes Velcro for hanging. Height: 3.45 m Diameter: 3.58 m Depending on the distance, I may be able to deliver.
