Gustave Maincent (1848-1897) oil on canvas depicting figures seemingly enjoying themselves by climbing a Parisian lamppost. Likely a view of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in its so-called Montparnasse setting. Good condition, original canvas. Excellent condition. Dimensions without frame: 40 cm x 31 cm. Dimensions with frame: 53 cm x 45 cm. Gustave Maincent was born on March 14, 1848, in Batignolles (Paris). He was a student of Isidore Pils and Cabasson. He exhibited at the Salon in 1869 (Le pont Marie), 1876 (Paris vue des butte Montmartre), and at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881 (Place Pigalle, honorable mention) to 1897 (Départ forcé, Inondation de la Seine). Spending his later years in Chatou, at the Maison Fournaise, where some of his paintings are preserved, he associated with renowned Impressionist painters. He specialized in views of Paris and its suburbs. He died on October 2, 1897, in Rueil-Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine). Honors: Knight of the Legion of Honor (April 16, 1897).
