Late 19th-century painting depicting a view of Villefranche-sur-Mer by Emmanuel Costa. Born in Menton in 1833 and died in Nice in 1921, he was for a time a professor at the Royal Academy of Turin. He exhibited in Nice at the Société des Beaux-Arts in 1853 and 1878 and participated in the Salon des Refusés in 1962 in Paris. He painted the ceiling of the Nice Opera House. He was a highly accomplished landscape painter and watercolorist with a distinctive and original technique.
