Born in Moscow, Leopold Survage arrived in France in 1908 to pursue his artistic dream, which he had begun at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. He studied under Henri Matisse and quickly became part of the Montparnasse art scene, where he became a leading figure of the School of Paris.
