"Museum - Small Carved Box - Lacemaker's Box - Love Box - Folk Art"
Early 19th century France – Auvergne, Haute-Loire Small carved wooden box, hand-carved from dark, dense wood, adorned with a radiant decoration of remarkable finesse. The three main faces feature a succession of solar rosettes framed by almond-shaped leaves and wolf-tooth friezes, protective motifs recurring in the folk art of the Massif Central. The sliding lid, very simple to use, is possibly later than the box was made, without this altering the beauty or unity of the whole. The object retains all its expressive force and visual coherence, brought about by manual work of rare sincerity. Each incision, patiently dug with the tip of a knife, reflects a form of artisanal meditation: a search for balance, rhythm, and harmony. This type of box, often referred to as a lacemaker's box, could contain thread, pins, or a few precious souvenirs. But above all it was an object of affection, an intimate setting fashioned as a token of love or fidelity. The rosettes, similar to miniature suns, evoke the inner light and human warmth of these popular objects, passed down with tenderness. Its brown patina, soft and satiny, reveals the passage of time and the silent presence of the hands that handled it. A moving and profoundly human piece, at the crossroads of artisanal gesture and the poetry of everyday life.
