A fine Japanese porcelain Satsuma dish.
Meiji period (1868-1912).
Decorated in moriage with various coloured enamels and gilt on a crackled ground with an intense and lively scene depicting two figures on a rocky outcrop next to a docked boat surrounded by water. The two figures are looking across to the other side at a person, surrounded by mythical Tengu, seated in front of a Bundai or writing table, holding up a scroll.
Condition:
Old overspraying to the bottom edge, probably to disguise a hairline of ca. 2.5 cm. Some small chipping to the moriage relief covering the boat. A possible restored break visible at the bottom edge (see last photo).
Dimensions:
Diameter 35.6 cm, height 5.5 cm.
Note:
A tengu is a mythical creature from Japanese folklore, often depicted as a humanoid with bird-like features such as a beak or a long nose. They are known for their martial arts skills and can be seen as both protectors of mountains and forests and as tormentors.
