Very pretty oil on canvas depicting a view of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie in Vendée. Signed lower left Jean-Pierre Stauffer. Countersigned and located on the back. Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is a commune in west-central France, located on the Côte de Lumière, in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region. It was born in 1967 from the unification of two communes located on either side of the mouth of the river La Vie: Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie. Jean-Pierre Stauffer was born in 1927 and died in 1994. He was a painter of the Swiss school. He studied in Lausanne and his apprenticeship as a graphic lithographer in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the city where he studied Fine Arts. A talented graphic designer, he worked until 1970, when he decided to devote himself solely to painting. He left Switzerland to settle in the Orange region of Provence in 1972. He married a Provençal woman, Anne-Marie. He stayed there until 1981, the year he returned to Switzerland. He then resided in his house in La Sarraz, called Les Dailles, which was a beautiful setting for his painting, highlighted in this restored old farmhouse, full of furniture patinated by the years. During his stay in France, he exhibited at 13, rue du Mont Cenis, the Roussard gallery organized an exhibition for him almost every year. His painting is calm, serene, he favors horizontals, his palette is limited, mainly composed of ochres and muted hues. His landscapes are rarely inhabited and details are pushed into the background, the foreground being occupied by large areas of monochrome colors, without significant variations, but contrasting. In 1985 solo exhibition at the A. Roussard Gallery in New York (57 E 57th Street). Also exhibited at Valloton in Lausanne.
