A native of the Rhineland, he worked in the cabinetmakers' district in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, but on rue du Bac, where he was considered an excellent craftsman. At the start of the Revolution, in 1791, he received an order for mahogany screens for the Tuileries Palace.
