Oil on panel,
53 x 41.5 cm
Refined portrait of a fifty-year-old man, dated 1606 and bearing the Latin inscription “Ætatis suæ 50 – Anno 1606”. Produced in the former Southern Netherlands, this elegant example of early 17th-century Flemish painting captivates with the precision of its execution and the nobility of its model. The face, of great realism, expresses the dignity and gravity of a notable of his time. The richness of the costume – large starched ruff edged with fine lace, gold buttons and gold chain – illustrates the taste and social rank of the model. The sober palette and neutral background highlight the complexion and the depth of the gaze. Oil on oak panel with an old vertical crack, without structural fragility. Slightly yellowed varnish, stable paint layer. Wooden frame from a later period, sober and harmonious. Work from the 1606 period, unsigned. Provenance: Belgian private collection. Dimensions: 53 x 41.5 cm Condition: good general condition, minor wear and old restorations consistent with age
