Pupil of Jules Coignet, Ernest Goupil took part in the scientific mission led by Jules Dumont d'Urville : Voyage to the South Pole and Oceania on the corvettes l'Astrolabe and la Zélée, executed by order of the King during the years 1837-1838-1839-1840 (1845).
Our engraving is probably made after a work executed by Ernest Goupil during this voyage.
Ernest Goupil died of dysentery in Hobart, (Tasmania) on January 2, 1840
