Charles Kvapil (1884-1957) Crécy-la-Chapelle, Le Moulin Nicolle, also known as Finot or de la Maltournée, today Moulin Jaune. (circa 1926/1927) oil on canvas, signed lower right, 65x81cm (81x102cm framed) Charles Kvapil was a Belgian painter of the School of Paris, of Czechoslovakian origin, born in November 1884 and died in Paris in 1957. His first works were exhibited in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers and until 1914. After the First World War, during which he was mobilized, Charles Kvapil moved to Paris and set up his studio in Montmartre, in the Hameau des Artistes, between rue Lepic and no. 11 avenue Junot. He later also lived in Villiers sur Morin, rue du Touarte. He first appeared before the Parisian public in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants and became increasingly well-known, eventually showing his work in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Italy, Stockholm, London and New York. He is now represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, and the museums of Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Étienne, Amsterdam and Tunis.
