Shaped bureau plat veneered in kingwood and rosewood laid en frisage (herringbone panels), profusely mounted with finely chased gilt-bronze ornament (matte and burnished). The undulating apron holds three drawers; cabriole legs ending in scrolling sabots. The top is framed by a bold gilt-bronze moulding and retains its original gilt-tooled leather with scrolling and egg-and-dart border.
The decorative language—shells, scrolls, acanthus cascades, cartouches and moulded reserves—epitomises the Louis XV revival produced by the leading Paris workshops during the Third Republic. The crisp chasing of the mounts, the amplitude of the corner falls and the impeccably laid veneers point to top-tier manufacture.
Inside a drawer, gilt stamp: “BOUDET, 43 Bd des Capucines, Paris”, with an inventory number.
The Maison Boudet, based on the Boulevard des Capucines, ranked among Paris’s foremost marchands-éditeurs in the last quarter of the 19th century. Serving an international clientele and grand Parisian interiors, Boudet commissioned and retailed luxury furniture and bronzes, working with the capital’s best cabinetmakers and bronze-workers for high-finish Louis XV and Louis XVI pieces. The presence of this stamp is widely regarded as a mark of prestigious retail provenance and excellent craftsmanship.
