"8 Rustic Oak Chairs By A Student Of Joseph Savina 1950's"
8 rustic oak chairs combining modern lines and Breton craftsmanship by a student of Joseph Savina 1950's

Joseph Savina was born in Douarnenez and settled in Tréguier, Brittany. In 1929, he founded a “Celtic Art” workshop in Tréguier (rue Saint-André) to produce furniture and objects combining Breton tradition with modernized forms. He is recognized for his talents as a cabinetmaker and sculptor, in particular for his ability to integrate Celtic motifs, interlacing, Breton symbols into furniture with modern lines. Savina is also an active member of the Seiz Breur movement (the “seven brothers”), which worked for a revival of Breton art by drawing inspiration from both local craftsmanship and modern trends of the 20th century. Among his influences and collaborations, Le Corbusier plays an important role: Savina executed sculptures based on Le Corbusier's drawings, and their exchanges nourished a vision of “plastic” furniture combining sculpture and functional use. Until March 1970, Savina directly managed his studio; at that time, he handed over management to Michel Le Calvez. After his death in 1983, his work was showcased by recent galleries and exhibitions, notably the exhibition “Joseph Savina — The Breton Avant-Garde” in 2024 in Paris. The Savina studio was also a place of transmission and training for artisans from the region. This exceptional ensemble—a monumental oak table with orange ceramic inlays, paired with its matching oak and straw chairs—is attributed to a disciple of Joseph Savina's studio. Inspired by the modernized Breton tradition that Savina popularized, this furniture combines the power of solid wood with the delicacy of ceramic detail. The Celtic spirit discreetly invites itself into the motif, while the lines remain resolutely modern. A rare piece, reflecting a dialogue between regional craftsmanship and great artistic ambition.
