An oil on canvas depicting the banks of the Yonne by Édouard Lobjoy (19th century). The work is signed in the lower right corner.
A charming view of Auxerre, at the end of the 19th century, probably late in the day, from the banks of the Yonne River. On the right, we can make out the silhouette of the Saint-Étienne cathedral. In the foreground, several boats bring a touch of life. The entire scene is bathed in gently filtered light, which still allows the urban details to stand out.
Lobjoy's style fits with the realist legacy of the 19th century, with careful attention to light and shape. He participated in the Salon des Refusés of 1863, a major event of the time, in part for the Impressionists.
The work is set in a 19th-century Barbizon frame of gilded stuccoed wood. The canvas and its frame are in good condition.
