Before creating their definitive works in bronze or marble, sculptors often used wax to create preparatory models. Malleable and precise, wax allowed them to work on shapes and details with finesse. It was notably used for lost-wax casting: the artist sculpted a form in wax, which was covered with plaster or clay. Once heated, the wax melted and left room for a mold into which the metal was poured. Wax models were also used to test ideas, poses or compositions before moving on to the final sculpture. This flexible material offered artists great freedom to experiment.
