Maurice DENIS
1870 Grandville - 1943 Paris
Study of an Italian Woman in Profile
Circa 1910 1915
Oil and gouache on charcoal lines
30 x 47 cm sheet
45 x 66 cm frame
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Romain Denis, grandson of the artist, then acquired from the latter by the Daniel Greiner Gallery.
Condition: Good condition despite a few small creases, cut and irregular edges.
Our study is characteristic of the artist's Italian period. Maurice Denis made numerous trips to Italy from 1894 onwards. During his travels in Italy and his growing interest in Renaissance painting, which he rediscovered, the artist gradually made some changes in his style and inspiration: lightening his palette, classicizing human forms, and developing a growing interest in religious and spiritual subjects.
