Portrait of a Lady
Drawing, cm 20,5 x 16,5 (framed cm 52 x 47). Inscribed on the back SAVINI.
The Savini family was active in Bologna for several generations. Giacomo Savini was an important landscape painter in early 19th-century Bologna. He had three sons who attended the Academy of Bologna in the first half of the 19th century: Raffaele, Carlo, and Cesare. Our drawing was probably executed by one of them or by Alfonso Savini (Giacomo's grandson and Raffaele's son). Enrico Savini's work, however, is less well known and awaits further study.
This painting will be part of the exhibition The Other Half of the Sky, which opens September 27th at the Galleria de' Fusari in Bologna. The painting will be included in the catalogue, which can be downloaded from the gallery's website. The exhibition is dedicated to women and includes paintings and drawings of portraits, nudes, and genre scenes from the 19th and 20th centuries.
