Bronze Sculpture: "the Scholar" Emile Louis Picault, 19th Century
This magnificent antique bronze figure was created in France around 1880. The lifelike sculpture, titled "Escholier, 14th Century," depicts a standing medieval man carrying a lantern, a book under one arm, and a sword at his waist. The detailed sculpture rests on a circular variegated marble base and is signed E. Picault. The medieval bronze sculpture is in excellent condition, with wonderful detailing, and features a rich patinated bronze finish. Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a French sculptor, best known for his works depicting allegorical and patriotic subjects, as well as mythological heroes. Picault was a very prolific artist, producing numerous sculptures during his long career as a sculptor. He began exhibiting his works at the Salon in 1863. He signed most of his works as "E. Picault." His sculptures are exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, he is registered with the Benezit Height: 26cm
