17th century carved oak four-poster bed, with more recent features. The headboard depicts the legend of Saint Veronica, who is said to have wiped Christ's brow with her veil before his crucifixion. This bed is housed in the Vatican. The carving depicts Saint Veronica and the image of Jesus, framed with carvings of cherubs and foliage. The carved balusters of the base are also framed, originally with rope supports, but now with fixed panels. This bed, dating from around 1630, is a remarkable testament to English history! Saint Veronica, also known as Berenice, was a widow from Jerusalem who lived in the 1st century. Tradition tells that Veronica, moved to see Jesus carrying the cross to Calvary, gave him her veil so that he could wipe his brow.
