Folk Art Cane In Boxwood On The Theme Of Heaven, Purgatory And Hell
Exceptional folk-art cane in
monoxyle boxwood carved along its length with characters and oak leaves:
- the representation of Paradise in the handle with 3 men and 3 women, two of whom have a snake in one hand ;
- the representation of Purgatory with nine characters and;
- the representation of Hell with the devil with his tail in three parts close to two people holding a snake in their hands.
- Finally, there is a sculpture of the head of God or the Devil (?) looking at the various scenes.
The ferrule is in horn.
Condition: Very nice patina.
Provenance: French collector, whose grandfather was the artist who carved the cane.
