Pastel on paper: height 77 cm - width 67.5 cm with old frame. The work is perfectly preserved, with fresh and luminous colors, without alteration: a very well-maintained pastel, in excellent condition. The period frame, on the other hand, shows fragility and is crumbling, requiring restoration. Representation of nobleman Étienne Barthélémy de Compaigné, born in Rochefort-de-Marsan in 1705 and died in Cauna in 1769, captain commanding a company of gentlemen at the Royal Military School of Paris. He received the Cross of Saint-Louis in 1746. Military career: – Cadet in the Lorraine infantry regiment in 1728, – Ensign in 1729, lieutenant in 1731, captain in 1738 (reformed), – Captain commanding the Royal Military School in 1758. Campaigns: Siege of Philisbourg (1734), Affair of Closerme (1735), Affair of Rheune-Williers (1743), Attack on the lines of Wissembourg (1744), Siege of Fribourg (1745), Siege of Mons and Charleroi (1746), Battle of Laufeld (1746), Siege of Berg-op-Zoom (1747). Family life: Married on October 7, 1760 to Marie Ursule de Cabannes (1735-1807), with a daughter married to Clair Joseph de Cabannes, Lord of Cauna.
